What is a main/ independent clause?

A

Subj + vb = complete thought

Ex: Students work

What is a subordinate clause?

A

Subordinate conj + subj + vb = incomplete thought

Ex: Whenever students work

You attach them to main clause

Ex: Whenever students work, someone screams at them.

What is an adjective/ relative clause?

A

Relative pronoun (who, whom, whose…) or relative adverb (when, where, why) + subj + vb = incomplete thought

Example: whom someone screams at

What is the difference between an essential adjective clause and a non-essential one and how can you know which one’s which?

A

Essential: has a comma
The clause is needed for the sentence to make sense
Example: The man who left his wallet is coming back for it.

Non-essential: no comma
The clause is not needed for the sentence to make sense
Example: Lisa, who takes ballet with Jan, is my best friend.

What is a noun clause?

A

Cláusula nominal/sustantiva- funciona como complemento directo de la oración

It has a subj and a verb and functions as a noun.

Example: I like [what I see], I know [that patience has its limits].
