Topic 1 - Biological diversity is reflected in the variety of life on Earth Flashcards
What is species?
Group or association of organisms which have a similar structure which can reproduce with one another.
What is Biological Diversity?
All contrasting or different types of organisms on Earth
What is Ecosystem Diversity?
Different classes or types of environments on Earth living (biotic) & non-living (abiotic) things connect.
What is Community Diversity?
Number of different communities which may be found in a given area or zone.
What is Genetic Diversity?
Diversity of genetic material involved within all individuals of a species. Also it is variations among members of a population.
What is the 3 Different Types of Biological Diversity?
- Diversity between Ecosystems
- Diversity within Ecosystems
- Diversity within Species
What is Diversity Between Ecosystems?
Compares various or different types of ecosystems based on their biotic & abiotic components.
What is Diversity Within Ecosystems?
This shows diversity of populations within an ecosystem.
What is Diversity Within Species?
This shows how different organisms of the few species can be.
What does Species Distributions mean?
It means that the Species Distribution is NOT the same at all places on our planet.
Biological diversity is immense or the greatest at the equator.
What are the 5 Kingdoms?
- Animalia (Animals)
- Plantae (Plants)
- Fungi (yeasts, mould, mushrooms)
- (Protista (single-celled organisms)
- Monera (bacteria)
What is the Classification System?
K - Kingdom P - Phylum C - Class O - Order F - Family G - Genus S - Species
What is the 2 word system?
It is a 2 word system developed by a scientist called Linnaeus:
1st word is the genus name
2nd word is the species name
REMEMBER: Genus has a capital on 1st letter & species all lowercase
Ex. Canis rufus = red wolf
What is Interdependence?
Relationship among species.
What are the 4 different Types of Interdependence?
Symbiosis, Predator-Prey Relationships, Interspecies Competition, Resource Partitioning
What is Symbiosis?
Connection or Association among members of different species.
What is Commensalism?
One organism benefits and the other organism does not however it is not harmed.
What is Mutualism?
Both of the organisms benefits.
What is Parasitism?
One organism benefits and other organism does not and is harmed.
What is a Niche?
The role of a population can contrast from area to area.
What is interspecies competition?
Happens when 2 or more species need the same supplies or resources.
What is resource partitioning?
When same resource is divided up by similar or alike species.
What are some changes in the environment?
- Climate
- New Predator
- New disease
- Toxic Substance
- Elimination of food source
What are some examples of variation?
Red Fox, Antibiotic Resistance
What is Variability?
Variation within a species.
What is Natural Selection?
When environment chooses or selects which individuals will live or survive long enough to reproduce.
Another definition is when environment conditions decide which organisms live or reproduce.
