Topic 1 – Atomic Structure And The Periodic Table Flashcards
What is the neutrons position in the atom?
In the nucleus
What is that electrons position in the atom?
In the shells
What is the relative mass and charge for a proton?
Mass: 1
Charge: +1
What is the relative mass and charge of a neutron?
Mass: 1
Charge: 0
What is the relative mass and charge of an electron?
Mass: 1/2000
Charge: -1
How many electrons are allowed in each shell?
2, 8, 8.
Why would atoms want to react?
The outer shell is not full and would want to either gain or lose electrons.
What does the group number tell you about an element?
The number of electrons in the outer shell
What does the period number tell you about an element?
The number of shells for the element
How do you work out the protons and electrons for an element?
By using the atomic number (bottom left number)
How do you work out the number of neutrons for an element?
Mass number minus the atomic number
Top and number minus the bottom hand number
If oxygen is in period 2 and group 6 what is its electronic configuration?
2,6
If neon is in period 2 and group 8 what is it’s electronic configuration?
2,8
What is a proton’s position in the atom?
In the nucleus
What is an isotope?
Isotopes are different atomic forms of the same element which have the same number of protons but different number of neutrons
What is meant by atomic number?
The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom
What is meant by relative atomic mass?
The mean mass of atoms of an element.
What is a horizontal row called on the periodic table?
A period
What is a vertical column called on the periodic table
A group
What did Mendeleev do to the known elements in 1869?
He arranged them according to their properties to make a table of elements
Why did Mendeleev leave gaps in the table of elements?
Four elements that were undiscovered
Where are the metals and non-metals on the periodic table?
Metals (Left⬅️)
Non-Metals (Right➡️)
What are the periods of the periodic table?
Rows on the table where elements in order of increasing atomic number
What are the groups of the periodic table?
Columns, elements in the same group have similar properties due to them having the same number of electrons in the outer shell
