Topic 1 - Atomic Structure Flashcards
What is an atom?
The simplest particle of an element that can exist on its own in a stable environment.
What are atoms made of?
Protons, electrons and neutrons
Where are protons, neutrons and electrons found in an atom?
Protons and neutrons are in the nucleus. Electrons are in the shells.
What’s the relative charge and mass of subatomic particles?
Relative mass | relative charge
Proton 1 +1
Neutron. 1 0
Electron. 1/1840 -1
Where are atomic and mass numbers written on a periodic table?
The mass number is on top of the elements symbol and the atomic number is at the bottom.
How do you figure out how many subatomic particles are in an atom of an element using a periodic table?
Number of protons = atomic number
Number of neutrons = mass number - atomic number
Number of electrons= number of protons (in an atom)
What is an isotope?
Atoms that have the same number of protons but have different amounts of neutrons.
How do you calculate relative atomic mass?
Relative atomic mass = sum of (mass number x abundance) /
Sum of abundance
What is a compound?
A substance formed when 2 or more elements are chemically combined
