Topic 1! Flashcards
What is Science?
Science is a way of understanding the world.
Science Research
Science research allows us to extend our understanding.
Applied Science
Applied Science allows us to use our understanding.
Science has limitations. Science cannot consider…
- Things that cannot be tested
- Philosophical questions
- Religious questions
- Social questions
Science uses several methods to reach understanding…
… the findings from each method must support each other before understanding is considered sound.
Examples are;
- Observation (many situations and scales)
- Experimentation
- Logical theoretical reasoning
- Mathematical reasoning
Scientific literacy helps students to…
- Be interested in and understand the world around them.
- To engage in the discourses of and about science.
- To be sceptical and questioning of claims made by others about scientific matters.
- To be able to identify questions, investigate and draw evidence-based conclusions.
- To make informed decisions about the environment and their own health and well-being.
What is the first step in Science Inquiry?
Questioning and Predicting;
You identify the problem, identify the variables, and come up with a research question or hypothesis.
What is the second step in Science Inquiry?
Planning and Conducting;
Operationalize variables. Plan the method, including the pre-trials. Carry out your experiment, measure and record.
What is the third step in Science Inquiry?
Processing and Analyzing,
organize and represent your data. Analyze the data and use your scientific knowledge to identify and explain patterns and trends.
What is the fourth step in Science Inquiry?
Evaluating.
Evaluate your findings in relation to the problem or question – remember, the findings from all methods used must support each other. Evaluate the design.
What is the fifth and final step in Science Inquiry?
Communicating,
communicate your findings using scientific language and representation.
What does literacies of science refer to?
Scientists use specific forms of language and literacy to learn about, represent and communicate their findings. They use things such as:
Data charts and tables Graphs Diagrams Text Headings Measurements and Units of Measurement Numbers
These are literacies of science.
Control variables
these are variables that stay the same.
Independent variable
is a variable that was deliberately changed. It can cause a change in the dependent variable, but the dependent variable can not change it.
Dependent variable
may change as a result of the manipulation.
