Topic 1 Flashcards
Matter
Anything that has mass and takes up space.
Substance
A single kind of matter that always has a specific makeup or composition.
Chemical Property
A characteristic that changes a type of matter into another type of matter.
Physical Property
A characteristic that can be observed without changing matter into another type of matter.
Atom
The basic unit from which all matter is made.
Element
A substance made up of only one type of matter.
Molecule
A group of two or more atoms held together by chemical bonds.
Compound
A substance made up of two or more elements chemically combined in a set ratio.
Mixture
Two or more substances physically combined.
Distillation
Method to separate liquids using boiling points. The lower boiling point liquid will evaporate leaving the other liquid behind.
Chemistry
The study of matter and how it changes.
Chemical Bond
Forces of attraction between two or more atoms.
Chemical Formula
Shows chemically combined elements in a set ratio.
Mass
Amount of matter in an object.
Volume
Amount of space matter occupies.
Weight
Measure of force of gravity on an object.
Convert
Cause to change in form, character, or function.
Density
Measure of and amount of mass in a given volume.
Physical Change
Alters the form or appearance of matter without changing it into another type of matter.
Chemical Change
Aka: Chemical Reaction
Change in matter producing one or more new substances.
Law of Conservation of Mass
Mass is neither creates nor destroyed in any chemical or physical change.
Exothermic Change
A change in which energy is released.
Endothermic Change
A change in which energy is absorbed.
