Topic 1 Flashcards
What is the nervous system
A communication system that receives sensory input, processes and integrates it, and then triggers an appropriate response.
MAINTAINS HOMEOSTASIS!
What are the 2 types of nervous cells? What do they do?
Neurons—> transmits nervous impulses (secretes neurotransmitters)
Glial cells—> insulates and adds structures (supports neuron’s functions)
What are nerves?
A bundle of neurons.
What are the 2 types of nerves?
Sensory —> responds to stimuli and carries info the the CNS.
Motor —> produces the effect
Subdivisions of the Nervous System (2)?
CNS —> composed of the brain and spinal cord
PNS —> The nerves that extend to and from the spinal cord (and other parts of the body).
What systems can the PNS be further divided into (2)?
Somatic Nervous system - voluntary and responds to bold text external stimuli.
Autonomic nervous system - involuntary and responds to internal stimuli.
Draw homeostatic regulation chart
Look at answer in textbook!
What 2 subdivision systems can the autonomic system be divided into?
Sympathetic Nervous System: responds to stress
Parasympathetic Nervous System: Brings body back to homeostasis (opposite of sympathetic ns). Essentially maintains normal involuntary functions.
Draw chart of subdivisions!
