Q

What do cyclins do?

A

They from a complex with cyclin-dependent-kinase and activate a protein via phosphorilation, which then trigger specific events in the cell cycle. After the event, the cyclin is degraded and the CDK is made inactive again.

Q

What is an oncogene? What are the 2 common types?

A

A gene that has the potential to cause cancer.

  1. Proto-oncogenes: stimulates cell cycle and growth
  2. Tumour suppressor genes: repress cell growth & the cell cycle
