Topic 1 Flashcards
1
Q
What do cyclins do?
A
They from a complex with cyclin-dependent-kinase and activate a protein via phosphorilation, which then trigger specific events in the cell cycle. After the event, the cyclin is degraded and the CDK is made inactive again.
2
Q
When are the cyclin checkpoints?
A
G1, G2 and metaphase
3
Q
What is the sequence of phases in the cell cycle?
A
G1, S, G2 (all are interphase), then Mitosis, then Cytokinesis
4
Q
What is a mutagen?
A
Something that can cause a mutation in the DNA
5
Q
What is an oncogene? What are the 2 common types?
A
A gene that has the potential to cause cancer.
- Proto-oncogenes: stimulates cell cycle and growth
- Tumour suppressor genes: repress cell growth & the cell cycle
6
Q
What is metastasis?
A
A tumour spreads from one location to another, forming a secondary tumour.
