Topic 1 Flashcards
What do red blood cells look like and do
Carry’s oxygen around body and is a biconcave
What does white blood cells look like and do
Protects body from infection and is bugger than red blood cell with nucleus in middle
What does platelets look like and do
Creates scabs/clots and are cell fragments
What is the liquid portion of the blood
Plasma
What do antibodies do
Fight disease
Do red blood cells contain haemoglobin
Yes
What vessel has valves
Vein
Describe capillaries
Single layer of cells in walls
Describe artery
Thick muscle layer
Where does the sistemic circulation take blood
Around the rest of the body’s organs
Where does the pulmonary circulation takes blood to
To and from lungs
What artery / vein goes to and fromheart
Coronary
What artery/vein goes to and from liver
Hepatic
What artery/vein takes blood to legs and lower body
Iliac
What vein takes blood from the brain and artery to the brain
Carotid artery and jugular vein
What takes blood to and from the kidney
Renal artery / vein
What takes blood to and from stomach
Gastric artery and hepatic portal vein
Small intestine blood travels from
Mesentric artery and hepatic portal vein
What is at the top of heart ventricle or atrium
Atrium
What’s at bottom of heart atrium or ventricle
Ventricle
Vena cava takes blood up to the
Heart
Aorta takes blood to
Rest of body
Plasma uses and descriptions
Yellow liquid and carries minerals
Pulmonary artery carries oxygenated or deoxygenated
De oxygenated
Pulmonary vein carries de oxygenated or oxygenated
Oxygenated
Tricuspid valve is on the
Right side of heart (left hand side)
Bicuspid valve is on the ___ side of heart
Left (right hand side)
What do capillaries do
They transport blood oxygen and nutrients to cells around the body
What do veins do
Carrie blood to heart
What does artery’s do
Carry blood away from heart
Why is left side of heart thicker muscle
Has to pump blood at higher pressure
Why do veins have thin muscle and why are they flexible
Because of lower blood pressure and are flexible to bring blood up to heart
Why are capillaries thin walled
So oxygen can enter from the lungs, food can enter from the intestine and waste can get picked up from cells
Why do artery’s have thick walls
So they don’t burst under the high pressure
What effect does exercise sometimes have on blood pressure
It lowers ur blood pressure
How to tell who is fittest
They will have lowest resting heart rate, lowest heart rate during excercise and lowest recovery time
How do heart attacks happen
Coronary artery is blocked, blood to heart muscle constricted, no oxygen to cardiac muscle(heart muscle) then heart muscle dies causing heart attack
Which side of hear5 is oxygenated
Left (right hand side)
Which side of heart is deoxygenated
Right side(left hand side)
