Biology Topic 2 Flashcards
What is the aseptic technique
The aseptic technique is used to grow bacteria
When may aseptic technique be used
During surgical procedures to make sure everything is clean
Why should u work. Beside a Bunsen when making growth plates
So all the bacteria in air is destroyed
How to keep aseptic technique test accurate
Flame neck of the bottle of agar
Why do u incubate Petri dish upside down
To lessen contamination risks from airborne bacteris
And so moisture doesn’t land on agar in Petri dish
How we prevent pathogens entering body
Mucus
Cilia
Hair focciles glands in skin producing antiseptic oils
Antiseptic fluid in tears
Acid in stomach
What is phagocytosis
process by which certain living cells called phagocytes ingest or engulf other cells or particles.
1st Phagocytosis steps
Phagocyte identify pathogen and attaches to it
2nd phagocytosis step
Cyptoplasm surrounds and englufs pathogen
3rd step of phagocytosis
Pathogen is killed and digested
4th step of phagocytosis
Indigestible residue is removed
What do lymphocytes do
White blood cells that produce antibodies
How do lymphocytes work
If infected with pathogens
Lymphocytes produce antibodies which are complementary In shape to pathogens
This causes pathogens to clump together
Phagocytes the kill pathogen
How do vaccines work
Inject dead pathogens or inactive pathogens into body so lymphocytes create antibodies that remember the pathogen so if it attacks again it can kill it fast
What’s a antibiotic
Medicine that fight infections caused by bacteria
