topic 1 Flashcards
Evaluation
The process of using clinical reasoning problem analysis, self appraisal and review to interpret the results of assessment in order to make judgement about the situation or needs of an individual, the success of occupational therapy or the therapists own performance.
Measurement
Undertaken by therapists to ascertain the dimensions (size), quantity (amount) or capacity of a trait, attribute or characteristic of a person that is required by the therapist to develop an accurate picture of the person’s needs and problems to form a baseline for therapeutic intervention and/or provide a measure of outcome
Outcome
The observed or measured consequence of an action or occurrence. In a therapeutic process, the outcome in the end result of the therapeutic intervention.
What is evaluation?
- A process to determine the merit, worth or value of something
- Systematically using data-based inquires to determine value
- More than assessment, takes information generated from data and considers its worth
Why do we evaluate
- establish whether people are benefiting from therapy/service
- Prioritise needs, situations and difficulties
- Guide planning to modify and judge the worth of our interventions
- Self evaluation is essential for learning
- Responsibility to evaluate work and self
Assessment vs. Evaluation
Assessment - the tools and instruments to determine the occupational performance skills and measure deficient of performance and engagement
Evaluation - more complex process that includes processes such as: interviews, observation and the use of assessment to reason and determine the impairment and measure occupational performance
Assessment, evaluation and outcome measure
- outcome measure at the heart of the assessment process
- evaluation helps make a judgement about the amount or value
- Assessment process uses all data generation methods
Assessment
Process of collecting information about a individual to create an occupational profile, understand their strengths, identify causes of issues
Analysis
A process used to identify key properties in a chosen occupation, task, or activity as well as skills, abilities or capacities required to complete it
Scale
Provides a means of recording something that can be rated in terms of levels, amounts or degrees.
Therapists use scales to rate the presence or severity of a problem, such as a symptom, or to rate the persons level of independence in a needed or chosen occupation, activity or task
Purpose for assessments
- guide therapeutic intervention
- first step in the health and care process and provides the foundation for effective intervention
-assessment involves the evaluation of the outcomes of therapeutic interventions
-interpreting information collected to make informed decisions related to the needs of the person and the appropriateness and nature of their therapy
-explicit use of the best evidence of clinical and cost-effectiveness
Why do we need assessments?
-government - focus on quality and outcomes
-fiscal restraints
-cost - effectiveness
- clinical effectiveness
- added value
- efficacy and efficiency
Locating assessment in the OT process
-ongoing and repetitive
-assessment is embedded throughout the Occupational Therapy process
-process of collecting information about a person to help create an occupational profile understanding their strengths, identity, causes of issues
Assessment/Evaluation/Measurement
Assessment - provides info/data for evaluation
Evaluation - makes judgement about the amount, number, or value of something
Measurement - assigning numbers to a defined characteristic, allows for comparison
