Top-Down Characteristics Flashcards
What is the scale ?
Large scale projects aimed to driving economic development. Decisions are now made by governments and any external groups involved.
What are the aims ?
Advance both the multiplier effect, which drives India’s modernisation forward, and the infrastructure
IGO / TNC Funding
These schemes are very expensive and so the country has to borrow from large organisations like the world bank or TNCs. Investments from companies are also another from of funding.
What technology is used ?
Advanced technology is used ( lots of machinery ), so locals can’t fix them, which could be a possible job opportunity
What is the role of TNC ?
TNCs have :
* Created jobs and offered education and training to employees ( RACETRACK )
*The additional wealth has led to the multiplier effect
*TNCs pay tax to the government, which can be spent on development projects
What is the role of the government ?
The projects are led by government institutions and they make the important decisions.
Why do they work ?
They modernise the country by making better OPPORTUNITIES. This is significant as it’s a multiplier effect in itself. More opportunities, more jobs, more tax, investments, causing opportunities. Meets (most) people’s needs which is the most important aspect.
Why can they not work ?
Can fail if the idea is not good ‘enough’ and the fact that it doesn’t meet people’s needs. Locals do not have much of a say ( influence ), which can lead to inequality and that ‘diverging’ aspect.
