top down approach Flashcards
what is offender profiling?
A tool to help investigators to accurately predict likely offenders
what is the top down approach?
Offenders are assigned to one of two pre-existing categories based on witness accounts and evidence from the crime scene.
what are the two types of offenders?
organised and disorganised offenders.
what is an organised offender?
Evidence of planning, targets victim, tends to be socially and sexually competent with higher-than-average intelligence
what is a disorganised offender?
Little evidence of planning, leaves clues, tends to be socially and sexually incompetent with lower-than-average intelligence.
what are the 4 steps in constructing an FBI profile?
(1) Data assimilation,
(2) crime scene classification, (3) crime reconstruction,
(4) profile generation
what is data assimilation?
profiler reviews crime scene
what is crime scene classification?
as either organised or disorganised
what is crime reconstruction?
hypothesis in terms of sequence of events, behaviour of offender etc
what is profile generation?
hypothesis about the likely offender.
ao3 lack of theoretical foundation?
limitation, only uses intuition, redices credibility, no research to support decision and may lead to bias.
cp- still works, evidence in real life.
ao3 wider application?
strength, covers many crimes including bulglary Meketo (2017) dev 2 new categories for bulgulars, interpersonal and opportunistic
ao3 behavioural consistency?
based on modus operandi, however it may be the situation the offender is in and not personality, behavioural patterns not always there, less value.
