bottom up approach Flashcards
what is the botom up approach?
Profilers work up from evidence collected from the crime scene to develop hypotheses
what is investigative psychology?
Establishes patterns of behaviour forming a statistical ‘database’.
what are the two factors of investiative psychology?
interpersonal coherence, forensic awareness.
what is interpersonal coherence?
Offender’s behaviour at crime scene reflects their everyday behaviour and thus is a clue.
what is forensic awareness?
Individuals who have been the subject of police interrogation before ‘cover their tracks’.
what is geographical profiling?
The location of crimes is a clue, crime mapping based on psychological theories of offender’s behaviour in relation to their home base.
what is Canter’s circle theory?
Marauders operate close to home, commuters operate further afield.
ao3 evidence for investigative psychology?
strength,
Canter and Heritage (1990), analysis of 66 SA cases, data examined w smallest space analysis, common BV found and case linkage to same person
cp- case linkage depends on database which is all historical crimes that have been solved.
ao3 evidence for geographical profiling?
strength
Ludrigan and Canter (2001)
collated info from 120 murder cases in US using smallest space analysis, found spatial consistency. centre of gravity of murder locations and found murderer. useful for marauders.
ao3 geographical info insufficient?
limitation, recordings of crime not always accurate. only 75% crimes reported, utility questioned as relies on geographical data
