Top 9 - Chemistry of the Atmosphere Flashcards
How do scientists think the atmosphere was formed during the first billion years or so of Earth’s history?
They think that the gases that came out of a lot of exploding volcanos formed our early atmosphere.
Name five gases that scientists think were present in the early atmosphere.
Cardon Dioxide
Ammonia
Mathane
Write the balanced chemical equation for photosynthesis.
Carbon Dioxide + Water
———-Light———»»
Glucose + Oxygen
Describe how levels of carbon dioxide in the the atmosphere were reduced.
Ocean, Algae and Green Plants absorbed CO2
State the approximate composition of the atmosphere today.
80% Nitrogen
19% Oxygen
1% Other small gases (CO2)
Name three greenhouse gases.
Cardon Dioxide
Methane
Water Vapour
What is a carbon footprint?
A carbon footprint are basically a measure of the amount of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases released over the full life cycle of something.
Explain how acid rain forms.
When the gases sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxide and released and go upward they mix with the cloud they form dilute sulphuric acid or dilute nitric acid this then falls as acid rain.
State two problems caused by acid rain.
Bad for human health
Kills plants
