Top 2 - Bonding Structure and Properties of Matter Flashcards
Describe how covalent bonds form.
Covalent bonds form when non-metal atoms bond together, they share Paris of electrons to make covalent bonds.
List the main properties of ionic compounds.
High Melt
High Boil
A lot of energy needed to brake intermolecular bonds
Don’t conduct electricity in solid
Do conduct electricity in liquid or dissolved form
Some are soluble.
What are simple molecular substances?
Simple molecular substances are substances made up of molecules containing a few atoms joined together by covalent bonds.
Explain why simple molecular compounds typically have low melting and boiling points.
Because although the atoms within the molecules are held together by very strong covalent bonds, the forces of attraction between the actual molecules are very weak
Give the definition of a polymer
Polymers are long chains of repeating units
Give three examples of Giant Covalent Structures.
Diamond
Graphite
Graphene
What is metallic bonding?
Electrostatic attraction between positive metal ions and delocalised electrons
Describe how an ionic bond forms.
Metal atoms lose the electron, or electrons, in their highest energy level and become positively charged ions. Non-metal atoms gain an electron, or electrons, from another atom to become negatively charged ions.
List three properties of metals
Malleable Good conductors of electricity and heat Solid at room temperature.
