Top 2 - Electricity Flashcards
Define current.
Electric current is an electric flow with an electric charge.
State the equation linking potential different and current.
Potential difference (V) = Current (A) x Resistance (Ω)
What does the symbol of a Diode look like?
A circle with a line with in the middle with a skip symbol in it.
What is an ohmic conductor?
The resistance of an ohmic conductor doesn’t change with the current instead as the current increases so does the resistance.
What does the circuit symbol for an LED look like?
The same as a diode but with to arrows outside the circle pointing North-East
How does the current through each component vary in a series circuit?
The current stays the same.
Explain how the resistance of an LDR varies with light intensity.
In bright light the resistance falls.
In darkness the resistance is highest.
What happens to the resistance of a thermistor as it gets hotter?
As the room and also the thermistor get hotter the resistance of the thermistor decreases.
True or false? The potential difference is shared between components in a series circuit.
True
How does the current through each component vary in a series circuit?
The same current flows through all the components.
How does potential difference vary between components connected in parallel?
The potential different is not shared and therefore is the same in each component as at the battery terminal.
True or false? Mains supple electricity is an alternating current.
True
Give and name the three colours of the three wires in a three-core cable.
Brown - Live Wire
Blue - Neutral Wire
Green / Yellow - Earth Wire
How is a current carried?
Carried by charged particles, electrons and ions
What is current measured in and what is the dictionary form of the word for it?
Amperes (Apms, A)
1 Coulomb/Second = 1A(Amp)
