tooth wear Flashcards
1
Q
What problems can tooth wear cause
A
- No interocclusal space for restorations or dental work
- Lack of tooth tissue so we cannot bond to anything
- increased gingival display
- Dental alveolar compensation
- Pulpal problems
- Changes in OVD
2
Q
What is erosion
A
Loss of tooth tissue from an acid reaction not caused by bacteria
3
Q
What are the etiological factors leading to erosion
A
- Extrinsic acid
- Lack of saliva
- Intrinsic acid
4
Q
What are some of the clinical presentation of erosion
A
- Cupping defects as dentine wears away faster than enamel
- Loss of contour
- Etched appearance to the teeth
- Palatal hollows
- Thinning incisor edges
- Chipping of enamel
- ‘proud’ restorations
5
Q
What is attrition
A
A loss of tooth substance as a result of tooth to tooth contact
6
Q
What are some aetiological factors that can lead to attrition
A
- Tooth clenching and grinding
- Normal function with hard or gritty food
- MDMA
- SSRIS
- Lack of posterior support
7
Q
List some of the clinical features of attrition
A
- Wear facets
- Loss of crown height
- Surfaces fo teeth meet precisely
- Enamel and dentine wear away at the same rate
8
Q
What is abrasion
A
Tooth wear caused by contact with an external object
