Tooth Surfaces Lecture 1 Flashcards
What are the Tooth Surfaces? hint: there are 6 of them
- Proximal (interproximal)
- Lingual
- Occlusal/Incisal
- Facial: Labial, buccal
- Cerivical
- Direct
What is meant by Proximal Surface?
Mesial: toward the midline
Distal: away from the middle
What is meant by Lingual Surface?
Facing the tongue
What is meant by Occlusal/Incisal Surface?
Occlusal (surface opposite arch -chewing) for posterior teeth
Incisal (surface facing opposite arch cutting) for anterior teeth
What is meant by Facial: labial, buccal Surface?
facing the lips or cheek
What is meant by Cervical Surface?
Near the CEJ (by the gumline)
What is meant by the Direct Surface?
The center of the surface
What are the Rules for Surface Combinations?
- use proximal surface first when in combination
- NO proximal, then occlusal/incisal first in combination
- Drop “al” and place “o” in combination
What are the Rules for the Three Surface Combination?
- Proximal (mesial/distal)
- Occlusal/Incisal
- facial/lingual (e.g. MOD)
*with 2 proximal surfaces, mesial FIRST!
Name the Tooth Morphologies
hint: there are 6 of them
- Cusp
- Cingulum
- Ridge
- Fossa
- Developmental Grooves
- Tubercule
Define Cusp
elevation on the tooth crown
Define Cingulum
lingual elevation (usually on an anterior tooth …Central Incisor)
Define Ridge
linear elevation on tooth
Define Fossa
concavity, shallow depression
Define Developmental Grooves
separate lobes
