Tooth anatomy Flashcards
1
Q
The 4 Types of Tissue in Mouth
A
3 hard tissues, 1 soft tissue
- enamel
- dentin
- cementum
- pulp tissue
2
Q
Enamel
A
- hard mineralized tissue covering the dentin of the anatomical crown of tooth
- most densely mineralized tissue in human body (97% inorganic)
- hardness and structure makes it brittle
3
Q
Dentin
A
- hard mineralized tissue that forms the main body of the tooth
- softer and less brittle than enamel (70% inorganic)
- has dentinal tubules (tiny tunnels)
4
Q
Dento-Enamel Junction (DEJ)
A
the internal line created by the meeting of the dentin and enamel in the anatomical crown of a tooth
(don’t see it until you break tooth –> internal junction)
5
Q
Cementum
A
- hard tissue resembling bone which covers the dentin of the anatomical root of tooth
- a mineralized tissue but less dense than dentin
- provides attachment for periodontal fibers
- thinnest layer
6
Q
Cemento-Enamel Junction (CEJ)
A
- also called cervical line
- irregular anatomic line around neck of tooth indicating the junction of the enamel of the crown and the cementum of the root
- all crown taper toward cervical line
7
Q
Cervix`
A
constricted area of the crown and root adjacent to the CEJ
8
Q
Pulp Tissue
A
- soft connective tissue found in center portion of the tooth entirely surrounded by dentin
- nerve tissue, blood vessels, lymphatics
9
Q
4 Functions of Pulp Tissue
A
- formation of dentin (odontoblasts in outter layer of pulp)
-maintains this fxn throughout life
-primary dentin–>laid down during period of tooth formation
-secondary dentin–>laid down during rest of tooths life
-2 types of secondary dentin
>reparative (formed in response to irritant -caries, thermal, functional)
>physiological (formed in response to normal aging process, dentin formation is consistent and uniform manner)
2.nutrition
-blood, lymph vessels
-maintain vitality of pulp
3.sensation
-nerve tissues
4.defense and protection
-formation of reparative secondary dentin in response to irritants
