Tools for ecodesign Flashcards
Tools for
Ecodesign
- Guidelines/checklists
- Compliance tools
- Simplified LCA tools
- Company specific LCA tools
- Add ons to engineering software
Ten Golden Rules in Ecodesign
• Set of ten generic guidelines with different environmental targets • Shall be adopted to respective product of company • Often used to determine requirements
MET Matrix
• Checklist to analyze environmental impacts along product life cycle in a systematic way
Ecodesign Pilot
• A qualitative tool enabling the user to quickly identify appropriate eco design
measures for the improvement of a product
• Concrete measures are presented in a language understood by product
developers and may be implemented immediately
• The pilot is a knowledge base containing examples to learn about eco design
Consequences of RoHS and REACH
• Manufacturers need to make sure to obey to legislation:
– Information on restricted substances (RoHS) and SVHC (REACH) in their products
– Meeting the restriction requirements of RoHS and REACH
• Tools presented in the next lectures:
– BOMcheck
– Global Automotive Declarable Substance List
– International Material Data System (IMDS)
BOMcheck
• It is a very high effort for suppliers to fulfill regulatory compliance by informing
along the supply chain
• BOM Check is a substances declarations web database for REACH, RoHS,
Batteries and Packaging Compliance
BOMcheck benefits
• Realized as webtool with centralised database for product related
environmental management for full substances and materials declaration.
• Simplify informational flow
along the supply chain
• Reduce costs for suppliers
• Improve data quality
• Declaration is compliant to industrial standard IPC 1752A
BOMcheck features and risks
• Possibility to check for groups of substances
• Use of Data Universal Numbering System (DUNS) with 9 digits to identify
companies
• Every supplier along the supply chain has to use BOMCheck for proper work
(which is often a requirement for small companies to become a supplier of big
companies)
• Complete Bill of Materials (BoM) of a product has to be uploaded (which is
regarded as a risk by many companies)
BOMcheck LoDS
• Materials entered in BOMcheck are compared against a list of restricted and
declarable substances ( LoDS
• BOMCheck Substance List Working Group provides LoSD for regulatory
compliance, regarding
- Registration Evaluation Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH)
Regulation 1907/2006
- Restriction of Certain Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive 2011/65/EU
- Packaging Directive 94/62/EC
- Conflict minerals by the rules of US SEC (Securities and Exchange Commision
- and other regulated substances in North America, Europe and Asia Pacific
• Due to the REACH candidate list of substances of very high concern (SVHC)
LoDS is updated twice a year
BOMcheck development
• BOMcheck Steering Group as an industry collaboration of
• Current status
- over 530 customers and over 3,400 suppliers worldwide
- RoHS and REACH materials declarations for more than 1.5 million parts are published
• In 2015 BOMcheck was bought by thinkstep
- No changes but considering an integration into GaBi
Global Automotive Declarable Substance List (GADSL)
• List of hazardous substances which can be present in a car, a car’s component
or material used in the automotive industry
• Covers substances regulated by national / international law:
– RoHS
– REACH
– Japanese Chemical Substance Control Law
– Canadian Environmental Protection Act
– California Assemby Bill No. 826 Perchlorate Contamination Prevention Act
– Etc.
Global Automotive Declarable Substance List (GADSL)
• Aim: „cover declarable substances in the flow of information relevant to parts
and materials supplied throughout the automotive value chain, from
production to the end of life phase“
• A declarable substance when present in a material or part in a vehicle will be
shown as “P” or “D”
– P = Prohibited: A substance designated “P” is either prohibited by regulation for use
in certain applications or may not exceed regulated threshold limits.
– D = Declarable: A substance designated “D” must be declared if it exceeds the
defined threshold limits.
International Material Data System (IMDS)
• IMDS is a global database that contains information on car components, semi
finished products and materials used by the automotive industry
• Information compiled in Material Data Sheets (MDS) include:
• All suppliers need to provide IMDS information
• Today IMDS comprises
– 33 car producers
– > 200,000 suppliers
– > 55 mio . data sheets
• Aims:
– Information on chemical composition of materials and components
– Information on hazardous substances
– Support calculation of recyclability and recoverability
– Facilitate meeting legal obligations placed on OEMs and suppliers regarding
hazardous substances (RoHS, REACH, etc.) and recyclability (End of Life vehicle
Directive)
• Special focus on substances included in components and materials:
Simplified LCA tools
• Accomplishing LCAs can be demanding in terms of knowledge, time, money…
• Simplified LCA tools shall allow for a screening analysis, based on:
– Material composition
– Manufacturing processes
– Transports
– Energy consumption during use
– Recycling information
ErP EcoReport
• Tool to assess the life cycle of energy-related products • Excel based tool intended for product group assessments within the ErP legislative process (in the Ecodesign Preparatory Study) • Excel sheets are downloadable for free, including a methodology report:
