Implementation of Ecodesign Flashcards
Standards
– ISO 14006: Guidance for incorporating ecodesign
– ISO/TR 14062: Integrating ecodesign in a product development process
ISO Framework
• Connecting three functional areas of knowledge (Environment, Design, Management Systems) - ISO/TR 14062:2002 Environmental management Integrating environmental aspects into product design and development - ISO 14001:2015 Environmental management systems Requirements with guidance for use - ISO 14006:2011 Environmental management systems Guidance for incorporating ecodesign - ISO 9001:2015 Quality management systems
ISO 14006:2011
Guidance for incorporating ecodesign I
• Standard provides guidance to support organizations in implementing eco design
activities into an environmental management system (EMS), focusing on:
- Organizational aspects
- Activities
- Top management support
ISO 14006:2011
Guidance for incorporating ecodesign II
• The standard is made for organizations that have implemented an EMS or an
QSM or both, because they have strong correlations.
• The integrity of the EMS should not be jeopardized.
• The guidelines are applicable to any organization
regardless of its size or activity.
• The international standard is not for certification
purposes and does not establish environmental
performance criteria. Nevertheless…
ISO/TR 14062
Environmental management - Integrating environmental aspects into product design and development
• A guideline for integration of eco design in a product development process
• Provides concepts and current practices relating to integration of
environmental aspects into product design and development
• Goal: Improvement of environmental performance of products
ISO/TR 14062 - stages of product development process
Stage 1: Planning Stage 2: Conceptual Stage 3: Detailed Design Stage 4: Testing/Prototype Stage 5: Market launch Stage 6: Product Review
ISO/TR 14062 - stages of product development process - Stage 1
Stage 1: Planning
Eco design activities
• What is the product idea?
• What are the priorities for this product?
• Totally new product or product improvement?
– When planning a product improvement,
the former generation might be an
appropriate benchmark for all
improvements
• Overall company strategy
• Consider business environment: Customer /
market needs, legislation, eco label planned,
market niches, competitors products
ISO/TR 14062 - stages of product development process - Stage 2
Stage 2: Conceptual
Ecodesign activities • Integrate eco design aspects when drafting the specification for a product • Check feasibility (technological, financial) • Apply e.g. guidelines, checklists to refine the specification • Communicate with your supply chain
ISO/TR 14062 - stages of product development process - Stage 3
Stage 3: Detailed Design
Ecodesign activities • Apply eco design tools and data bases • Find alternatives for materials to be avoided • Life cycle assessment • Life cycle scenarios • Design for assembly / disassembly
ISO/TR 14062 - stages of product development process - Stage 4
Stage: Testing/Prototype
Ecodesign activities
• Check whether a realistic implementation of
environmental requirements has been
achieved
• Adaptations and changes in the design if
necessary.
• Benchmark with former product generation
ISO/TR 14062 - stages of product development process - Stage 5
Stage 5: Market launch
Ecodesign activities
• Communicate environmental excellence of
your product
• Communicate related features: quality, life
cycle costs
• Raise awareness among consumers
ISO/TR 14062 - stages of product development process - Stage 6
Stage 6: Product Review
Ecodesign activities • Evaluate success of the product • Identify further environmental improvements for next product generation • Which innovations are next?
Supply Chains
- Supply chains can be complex…
* Supply chains of OEMs can cover thousands of suppliers around the globe
Supply Chain Management
• Supply chain management (SCM): “planning, organizing, directing and
controlling of all the individual supply chain processes by integrating/
coordinating and controlling both the internal company and the external
suppliers/customers to deliver value to the costumer”
• Aims: Securing supplies, materials and services of the right quality in the right
quantity at the right time from the right place at the right cost price”
Supply Chain Management
=> Traditionally no environmental aspects included
Green/
Sustanaibale Supply Chain Management
• Green supply chain management (GSCM): Integrating environmental thinking
into supply‐chain management, including product design, material sourcing and
selection, manufacturing processes, delivery of the final product to the
consumers as well as end‐of‐life management of the product after its useful
life Srivastava 2007)
• Sustainable supply chain management ( The management of material,
information and capital flows as well as cooperation among companies along
the supply chain while taking goals from all three dimensions of sustainable
development, i.e., economic, environmental and social, into account which are
derived from customer and stakeholder requirements ( Seuring and Muller,
2008)
