Claw Hammer
The “Claw” is the forked curved metal feature on the back of the
hammer head that is useful for pulling nails out of wood

Rubber Mallet

Sledge Hammer
Will be larger than a Rubber Mallet and have a steel or iron head

Double Face Hammer
Typically, two soft (i.e. rubber) faces on the hammer

Diagnol Cutting Pliers
NOT for gripping, used for cutting wire, etc.

Slip Joint Pliers
Slide the handles into the second hole to grip bigger things

Linesman Pliers
Used for cutting and gripping

Channel Lock Pliers
Multiple settings for the handles to grip different things of
different sizes. Sometimes also called Tongue and
Groove Pliers

Needle Nose Pliers
For reaching into tight places.
May also have a cutting capability

Vise Grip Pliers
Mechanical lever to squeeze with tremendous grip
Adjust squeeze force with the screw in one handle.
Release the grip after locking with the little lever on the
second handle

Flat Head Screwdriver
For screws with a single slot
The “classic” screwdrives. Comes in many different lengths
and sizes

Philips Head Screwdriver
For screws with two crossed slots

Framing Square
Looks like two metal rulers joined at a right angle

Wood Saw
Many different blade types and sizes with big
cutting teeth and small cutting teeth

Hack Saw
Usually for cutting metal sheet
Has a single thin blade with very fine teeth

Bar Clamp
One side of the clamp can slide along the bar and clamps
and object by pushing against the other side of the
clamp. Clamping force adjusted by the handle or
sometimes by a screw

Adjustable Wrench
Sometimes also known as a “Crescent Wrench”
Adjust the gripping size using the thumb wheel

Tape Measure

Lag Bolt
Course, wide-spaced thread. Can be pointed or flat end.
Thread may not run all the way to the head
Head might be hexagonal or other shape

Machine Bolt
Finer, closer spaced thread. Flat end. Thread
may not run all the way to the head. Hean can be
hexagonal or other shape. Sometimes also known
as a “cap screw”

Carriage Bolt
Typically a square “shoulder” under the rounded head
The bold is usally drawn down into a square hole by
a nut on the end of the bolt

Eye Bolt
Sometimes has a pointed end so that it can be screwed into
wood. Or it has a bolt to hole it on the other side
of the thing the bolt is attached to.

Tool Chest

Electric Drills
Can be battery powered (“cordless”) or plug into the
wall with an electric cord. Can be used to drill holes
or drive screws, or polish, or grind - all depending
upon what you stick in the end. Can have different
sizes, usually characterized by the biggest diameter
thing that can be put into the drill

Straight Drill Bit
A bit of a point on top to center the drill bit when you begin
to drill a hole.

Masonry Drill Bit
For drilling into concrete, bricks, rocks, dry wall, etc.
Usually has a much more course spiral than
a straight bit and may have a flared head
or a specil cutter on the head

Auger Bit
Usually for making large holes in wood or plastic.
Typically has a small pointed tip to get started
followed by a much larger diameter helix.
Some with a very large diameter helix are used
to drill holes in the ground

Wood Boring Bit
Another bit for drilling large holes in wood.
A small pointed tip to get started followed by a
single wide blade. No helix.

Screwdriver Heads
These fit into a hand-held electric drill or a
socket driver

Allen Wrenches
These are used to tighten screws with a
hexagonal hole

Dremel Tool
A very high speed small drill motor
Often used with small grinders, polishers, or
very small drill bits

Ratchet
Used to tighten or loosen bolts with sockets
The direction of twist is controled by the
knob on the head of the ratchet

Sockets
One end of these has a square hole to fit on the
ratchet. The other end has a hexagonal hole to
fit around the head of a bolt.
Can be long or short

Combo Wrench
Has an open end and a closed end of a fixed
size to fit a specific size bolt. Usually come
in a set containing many wrenches of
different sizes. There are also wrenches with
two open ends, or ones with two closed ends

PVC Fittings
90-deg corners, y-shaped fittings, capped ends,
threaded ends, etc.
Used with glue on the ends of long, straight PVC (plastic)
pipe. Can be many different diameters.

Zip Ties
Often flexible hard nylon (like a plastic). One end fits
through the other and can be pulled tight
to form a loop, but can’t be pulled back
the other way

Dog Clips

Nails

Fencing Nail
Sometimes used to hold down tubes or wires

Angle Grinder
Electric. Can be battery or cord.
The motor drives a circular grinding wheel

Circular Saw
A circular saw blade driven by a big electric motor

Jig Saw
This is an electric motor that drives a thin
metal, toothed blade up and down.
Often used to make cuts that are not a straight line
Can cut thin metal or wood, depending on the blade

Router
This electric motor spins a short cutting
blade that has different shapes so it can
cut slots and grooves with different shapes

Miter Saw
Think of it as a circular saw mounted on
a special fixture that helps you cut at
precise angles

Table Saw
Think of this as a fixed circular saw mounted under
a table so just a bit of the blade pokes through
the surface of the table. You slide the thing you
want to cut along the table and onto the spinning blade.

Chop Saw
Think of it as a circular saw that pivots down onto
the material to be cut. Can have a metal
circular saw blade or an abrassive wheel like a
grinder to cut through things

Drill Press
Like an electric drill, but the drill moves up and
down, forcing the drill bit into the work piece.

Band Saw
Like a jig saw, except the cutting blade is a loop
and its cutting edge goes in one direction
through the cutting area

Bench Grinder

Electric Saw
A small-ish chain saw, electric powered

Pole Saw
An electric saw on a pole with the motor
on one end and the saw on the other.
Useful for pruning/cutting tree branches

Metal Shear
Cuts, or shears, sheet metal

Fencing Stapler
Drives large, metal staples (like a fencing nail)
into wood or similar. Often used to put
shingles on a roof. It’s pneumatic, meaning
it’s driven by compressed air.

Reciprocating Saw (a.k.a Sawzall)
Like a jig saw, the blade moves back and forth.
Electric, cord or battery

Bow Saw
Looks like a big hack saw, but for wood, tree limbs, etc.

Trench Shovel
For digging deep, narrow holes, like a trench

Post Hole Digger
For digging deep holes.
With the handles close together, drive the metal end into
the ground, then pry the handles apart so that the metal
end grabs some dirt. Extract and do it again to dig deeper.

Spud Bar
Has a chisel at one end that is intended for removing
material through a chipping or shaving action.
Like making a hole through frozen ice.

Pruning Shears

Pole Loppers
A single blade saw on a long pole to prune
high branches. The saw is moved in a sawing
motion by a rope and pulley system.

Hedge Shears
For pruning and shaping hedges

Gardening Tools

Pressure Washer
A motor driven compressor makes water
from a hose into a high-pressure spray.
Could be 3,000-4500 psi at the sprayer.

Leaf Blower
Electric or gas motor

Lawn Mower
Gas or electric motor

Weed Eater
Plastic Nylon wire spun at one end spun by
an electric or gas motor at the other end.
The fast spinning wire cuts weeds.
