When does the gate open?
7:45 am
How often do you need to clean locks?
Once a week - must be cleaned on Tuesday, clean gate locks every Friday
What do you need to do in enclosures in morning lab?
check white board, gather tools, clean up feces, prepare enrichments, check integrity of exhibit, provide fresh food and water (sign out diet), water plants, offer enrichment, clean up viewing area, clean tools and bowls, fill out records, write “data cards”, return keys
What do you need to do in enclosures in afternoon lab?
check white board, sign provide diets/water (sign out diet), clean bowls, remove enrichments, wrap up projects, update data cards, return keys
What do you do in rounds?
Animals (physical, behavioral, needs), Enclosure (secure, integrity, shift doors), Guest (signage, landscaping, safety).
What do you do for landscaping?
Exhibit: Water plants, remove toxic/invasives, remove sharp points
Viewing area: Water plants, remove branches and fungus, weed, clean sign, trim branches
Surrounding: remove branches, trim branches, remove debris, maintain trail
What is recorded daily (at the end of each lab)?
Diet, cleaning, enrichment, behavioral, medical, signature
What should be reported on a data card?
Must be communicated verbally as well!
Data (diet, health, etc.), medication, behavioral observations, changes in appetite, coat, vocalizing, breathing, bowel movements, nesting or courtship behaviors, aggression, etc.
Why would you submit a diet change card?
Change in animal count, physical conditions, season, new food item availability. Log the submission of diet change cards
What forms are special to Herps and Education?
Reptile/amphibian maintenance form, feeding record (for individual animals)
What are the steps in fecal examinations (am lab)?
This is to check for parasites by both 1) fecal flotation, and 2) direct smear technique;
1) acquire a sample with wooden spatula or toothpick
2) set up float test
3) run smear test
4) read smear test
5) read float test
6) clean up
7) record results

What is important to now about medications?
dosage, preparation ,obtaining medications, recording medications
What are ways to dispose of waste?
Compost pile, limb pile, construction pile, household garbage dumpster, recycling locations
What do you do if you see a pest problem?
notify the zoo manager
