Q

When and how long should portable generators be tested?

A

Operate portable generators for 15 minutes weekly. During this time, operate all lights for 5 minutes to test for proper working order of lights and generator under load. If lamps do not light while testing or using, check bulbs for tight connection.

Q

If portable generator used to power an exhaust fan what is ideal length of extension cord?

A

If a portable generator is used to power an exhaust fan, the ideal length of the electrical cord should be 50 feet or less. Electrical cords of longer lengths reduce the efficiency of the fan and may result in damage to the equipment being used. Distance is not a problem when powering small tools and lights.

Q

When are inboard generators checked and who performs repairs to inboard generators?

A

4.6

Onboard generators shall be checked weekly during Multi Unit Drill.

fleet Services performs all repairs. Note, however Electric cords and pigtails should be sent to Technical Services for repair or replacement when needed. Additional electrical cords and pigtails may be procured from Technical Services.

Q

What protective equipment must be worn while operating chain saw?

A

While operating the chain saw, the operator and control person shall wear the following NFPA compliant and FDNY approved protective equipment: Long sleeve work duty shirt or bunker coat, helmet, eye protection, ear protection, saw protected gloves, bunker boots, and saw protected chaps.

7.3.1

Chaps must be worn over either long pants or bunker pants. Chaps shall not be worn over shorts.

Q

How should left arm be kept while operating?

A

3.5.2

Left arm is to be kept in the “straight arm” position with elbow straight to withstand any kickback force.

Q

While cutting downward you will experience what type of reaction?

A

3.10

While cutting downward you will experience a pulling reaction. When the saw breaks through the wood the pull will cease. Operator must be ready to stop pushing down on the saw and hold the saw nose up. (Figure 4C)

Q

When does pull-in occur and what can be done to prevent it?

A

Pull-in:
A. Pull-in occurs when the chain on the bottom of the bar is suddenly stopped. The chain on the bottom of the bar stops when it is pinched, caught or encounters a foreign object in the wood. The reaction of the chain pulls the saw forward and may cause the operator to lose control.

B. Pull-in frequently occurs when the bumper spike of the saw is not held securely against the tree or limb and when the chain is not rotating at full speed before it contacts the wood.

Warning: Use extreme caution when cutting small size brush and saplings which may easily catch the chain and pull you off balance.
C. To avoid pull-in:

  1. Always start a cut with the chain rotating at full speed and the bumper spike in contact with the wood.
  2. Pull-in may also be prevented by using wedges to open the kerf.

NOTE:
The kerf refers to the space left behind the cutting blade as it cuts.

Q

When does a pushback occur and how can you avoid it?

A

3.11.1

Pushback:
A. Pushback occurs when the chain on the top of the bar is suddenly stopped when it is pinched, caught or encounters a foreign object in the wood. The reaction of the chain drives the saw straight back toward the operator and may cause a loss of saw control. Pushback frequently occurs when the top of the bar is used for cutting.

B. To avoid Pushback:

  1. Be alert to forces or situations that may cause material to pinch the top of the chain.
  2. Do not cut more than one log at a time.
  3. Do not twist the saw when withdrawing the bar from an underbuck cut because the chain can pinch.

Q

What is circle of danger for chainsaw operations?

A

A circle of danger of a radius of at least 10’ will be established before the commencement of cutting. The saw operator and control person will be the only personnel in this area during cutting. Officer is to monitor conditions and relay orders received from the officer in command. If possible, the officer is positioned as to permit visual contact with the control person.

Note: Saw refueling area is to be located outside the circle of danger.

Q

Kickback potential of the chain saw is very dangerous. Never make plunge cuts with the tip of the blade. Never use the tip of the saw blade for cutting. This practice can cause a violent, uncontrollable kickback. (See figure 5).

5.2

Do not attempt cutting an object which has fallen against a structure and is now supported by it.

5.3

If a branch, tree section or other object is hanging, leaning or otherwise damaged, members are to prevent access to the danger area by unauthorized persons. If practical, the object should be stabilized by lashing or shoring. Cutting it down is not to be attempted.

Q

What is proper way to cut a log resting in two fulcrum points?

A

6.3

Cutting Logs Resting On Two Fulcrum Points
Wood is supported on both ends but not near point to be cut. To avoid pinching bar:

6.3.1

If practical, support wood on both sides of cut near the planned location and make a rip cut

6.3.2

If it is impractical to support:

A. Cut 1/2 - 3/4” of the diameter downward.

B. Finish cut by cutting upward the remaining portion. (Figure 9)

Q

What is the proper way to limb a tree?

A

6.7

Limbing - is the removing of branches from a fallen tree.
Warning: There is an extreme danger of kickback during the limbing operation. Do not work with the nose of the bar. Be extremely cautious and avoid contacting the log or other limbs with the nose of the guide bar. Do not stand on a log while limbing it - you may slip off or the log may roll.

A. Start limbing by leaving the lower limbs to support the log off the ground. When under bucking freely hanging limbs, a pinch may result or the limb may fall, causing loss of control.

B. If a pinch occurs, stop the engine and remove the saw, by lifting the limb.

C. To help maintain control and a safe operating stance, it is not necessary to run the saw at full throttle.

NOTE:
Warning: Be extremely cautious when cutting limbs or logs under tension. The limbs or logs could spring back toward the operator and cause loss of control of the saw and severe or fatal injury to the operator.

Q

What is bucking?

A

6.9

Bucking - is cutting a log into sections.
NOTE:
Warning: When bucking, do not stand on the log. Make sure the log will not roll downhill. If on a slope, stand on the uphill side of the log.
6.9.1

Cut only one log at a time.

16
Q

When are chainsaws checked?

A

Saws are to be examined and tested weekly. Schedule is to be established by the Company Commander.
