Tongue, oesophagus, pharynx and stomach Flashcards
Where are the intrinsic tongue muscles and what do they do
- Originate from structures outside of the tongue
- Move the tongue around
Where are the extrinsic tongue muscles and what do they do
- Don’t attach to anything outside the tongue
- Change the tongue’s shape
Whats the role of the styloglossus muscle
- Originates from styloid process of temporal bone
- Lifts tongue upwards and backwards
What does the hyoglussus originate from and what does it do
- Originates from hyoid bone
- Pulls tongue downwards
What does the genioglossus originate from and what does it do
- Originates from superior genial tubercles of mandible
- Protrudes the tongue
What is the definition of the motor supply
All the muscles of the tongue are innervated by cranial nerve (the hypoglossal nerve)
What nerves innervate the anterior 2/3 of the tongue
- Special sensation (taste) - facial nerve (VII)
- General sensation - lingual nerve - branch of mandibular nerve
What nerve innervates the posterior 1/3 of the tongue
Glossopharyngeal nerve
What’s the definition of the Nasopharynx
The muscular tube that runs vertically behind the nasal cavity
What’s the definition of the Oropharynx
The muscular tube that runs vertically behind the oral cavity
What’s the definition of the Laryngopharynx
The muscular tube that runs vertically behind the larynx
What are the 3 circular muscle pairs that form the outer muscle layer
- Superior constrictor
- Middle constrictor
- Inferior constrictor
What are the 3 longitudinal muscle pairs that form the inner muscle coat
- Salpingopharyngeus
- Stylopharyngeus
- Palatopharyngeus
What is the motor nerve supplied by
The vagus nerve
What is the stylopharyngeus supplied by
The glossopharyngeal nerve
