Surface anatomy and the skull Flashcards
What are the 5 major features of the mandible
- Ramus of the mandible
- Mandibular notch
- Body of the mandible
- Mental foramen
- Mandibular foramen
Which bones all contain air sinuses
Maxilla, frontal, sphenoid
Describe the temporomandibular joint at rest
Head of condylar process lies in the mandibular fossa (depression on the under-surface of the temporal bone)
Describe the temporomandibular joint when in use
- Condylar head moves forward onto the articular eminence
- Anterior dislocation if condylar head slips in front of the articular eminence
What are the major features of the oral cavity
- Bounded by dental arches and the oropharyngeal isthmus
- Frenula - folds of mucosa between gingiva and cheek/lips
- Frenulum - Limits how much you can lift your tongue
- Sublingual folds
How many parts is the tongue comprised of and what are they
- 2/3 anterior
- 1/3 posterior
What is the sulcus terminalis
V-shaped boundary between anterior and posterior tongue
How many parts is the palate comprised of and what are they
- Anterior hard palate
- Posterior soft palate
What is in the soft palate
- Muscular
- Tendinous
What bones form the border between the soft and hard palate
Palatine bones
What are the bony parts of the hard palate
- Palatine process of maxilla
- Horizontal plate of palatine bone
Where is the greater palatine foramen found
Between maxilla and palatine bone
What is the anterior triangle of the neck bound by
- Anterior border of the sternocleidomastoid muscle
- Inferior border of the mandible
- Midline of the neck
What is the posterior triangle of the neck bound by
- Posterior border of the sternocleidomastoid muscle
- Anterior border of the trapezius muscle
- Middle 1/3 of the clavicle
Where are the sternocleidomastoid muscles found
Start at the clavicle and sternum
