Tongue Flashcards
Organs associated with certain locations on the tongue
No coat
Yin/Blood xu
Yellow Coat
Indicates heat and interior syndromes
White coat (Thin/Thick)
Thin: normal
Thick: exogenous factors and cold
Dusky/Purple
Either cold or heat syndromes
Purple w/ deep red coloration indicates inadequate fluid (suggests that exuberant heat has led to consumption of yin and fluid, and stagnation of qi and blood)
Pale purple or moist blue-purple indicates a blockage of vessels due to preponderant endogenous cold
Purple spots on the tongue also suggest stagnation of blood
Crimson
Deep red is a sign of severe endogenous heat (usually found at advanced stage of febrile diseases or in protracted and critical cases) suggests hyperactivity of fire due yin deficiency
Red
heat syndrome caused by an excess of qi and blood usually seen in the syndrome of interior heat or endogenous heat due to yin deficiency
Pale
deficiency and cold caused by insufficient yang-qi and blood
Swollen
Qi xu/Damp
Teeth-marked/Scalloped
