general note on u-mutation sound changes

A

“a” when followed by “u” becomes “ö’ (when stressed) or ‘u’ (when unstressed). Thus saga means saga but ‘sögur’ means ‘sagas’; gamall ‘old’ (masculine nominative singular). Somtimes the ‘u’ has been lost, but its effects remain, as in ‘land’ meaning ‘land’ but ‘lönd’ means ‘lands’ (<*landu).
