Who were the Tolpuddle Martyrs?
A peaceful group of Dorset Farm Workers from the village of Tolpuddle
What did the rich farmers fear?
Although they didn’t act violently they feared they might lose control of their workers
What did the government fear?
That the farm workers were challenging their right to control the country to suit the richest members of society
Why couldn’t TM be described as revolutionaries?
They were not violent
What did the 1797 law state?
That you couldn’t swear on secret oaths in the navy and was used to arrest the TM
What what the 1797 act designed to stop?
Mutinies but was used against the farm workers
What did the TM hold?
Secret meetings
When did the TMs return home from Australia ?
1836
Why were the government forced to return the tms home?
People held marches, huge protects and petitions
