Togaviridae Flashcards
Describe the important alphaviruses that cause disease in animals & humans of Togaviridae.
- Eastern equine encephalitis virus
- western equine encephalitis virus
- Highlands J virus
- Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus
Describe the equine viral encephalitis caused by alphaviruses.
Family Togaviridae
-western equine encephalitis virus (WEEV)
-eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV)
-venezuelan equine encephalitis (VEEV)
Describe the eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV).
-zoonotic
-transmitted by mosquitos
-caused by a member of genus alpha virus
-encephalitis in horse & humans
-enzootic in eastern North America, Caribbean basin, Central America, northern & eastern coast of South America
>in North America = eastern & gulf coast to Texas
—occur in late summer & early fall (heavy rainfall)
Describe the EEEV transmission.
Describe the EEEV pathogenesis.
Describe EEEV in horses VS humans
Describe western equine encephalitis virus (WEEV).
*CS same as EEEV
Describe WEEV transmission.
Describe the classification of Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus.
Describe VEEV enzootic cycle VS epizootic cycle,.
Describe the clinical signs of VEEV in horses VS humans.
- Horse
-non suppurative encephalomyelitis - Human
-acute, mild, systemic dz
-headache, chills, coughing, vomit, diarrhea, fever, myalgia, symptoms of encephalitis
-preg women = placental damage, fetal encephalitis, abortion/stillbirth, congenital dz
Describe the control & prevention of equine encephalitis in horse & humans.
- Horse
-formalin inactivated EEEV & WEEV vacc
-univalent or bivalent prep in combo w other antigens (tetanus toxoid)
-tissue culture attenuated vacc for VEEV made w strain TC-83 - Human
-no vacc for EEEV & WEEV & VEEV
-TC-83 live attenuated vacc in lab worker & military
