today revision Flashcards
an atom is
The smallest part of an element that can exist.
a compound is
A substance formed by the chemical union of two or more elements. For example, water is a compound of hydrogen and oxygen. Each of its molecules contains two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. There are very many different compounds.
a element is
A substance made of one type of atom only. For example, lead and gold are elements. A piece of pure gold contains only gold atoms. A piece of pure lead contains only lead atoms.
a molecule is
A collection of two or more atoms held together by chemical bonds. for example Carbon dioxide - CO2
pollination is
The fertilisation of flowers by passing on their pollen.
fertilisation is
The joining of a male and female gamete.
photosynthesis equation is
carbon dioxide + water (+ light energy) → glucose + oxygen
Anthers are
Produce male sex cells (pollen grains)
Ovary are
Produces the female sex cells (contained in the ovules)
competition are
The interaction between organisms after the same limited resources.
self pollination is
pollen is transferred from the stamen to stigma on the same plant
cross pollination is
pollen is transferred from the stamen of one plant to the stigma of a different plant
stamens are
the stamen are the male part of the flower.they consist of the anther and the filament.the anther contains pollen grains, which produce the male sex cells.
the filament supports the anther
carpets are
the female parts of the flower.they consist of the stigma style and ovary.the ovary contains the female sex cells inside the ovules
the four things you need for photosynthesis
Chlorophyll can make food the plant can use from carbon dioxide, water, nutrients, and energy from sunlight. This process is called photosynthesis.During the process of photosynthesis, plants release oxygen into the air.People and animals need oxygen to breathe.
insect pollination
the insect pollination is brightly covered petals and also scented flowers with nectaries.
stick stigma to take the pollen off the insect as it goes from plant to plant to feed in the nectries.
wind pollination is
the features of plants that use wind pollination is.
it is usually small dull petals on the flower.
no scent or nectaries.
it has a long filament hang the anthers outside the flower so a lot of pollen is blown away.
also stigmas are feathery to catch pollen as it carried past in the wind
Where is pollen produced?
Stamen: The pollen producing part of a flower, usually with a slender filament supporting the anther.
Anther: The part of the stamen where pollen is produced.
Pistil: The ovule producing part of a flower.
The ovary often supports a long style, topped by a stigma.
Where does fertilisation occur?
In humans fertilization occurs in the end of the fallopian tube away from the uterus (close to the ovary).
The egg and the associated cumulus cells are ovulated (released) from an ovarian follicle and picked up by the fallopian tube.
The tube pulls it inside where the sperm can find it.
Which part of the flower develops into the fruit?
Ovary: female reproductive structure of flower that usually develops into the fruit.
Pericarp: fruit tissues surrounding the seeds that are derived from the ovary.
Ovule: egg-bearing structure of the flower that develops into a seed.
