state of matter Flashcards
solid
Gases have neither definite shape nor definite volume. They expand to the size of their container.
•Gases are fluid, and flow easily.
•Gases have low density, unless compressed. …
•Gases diffuse (mix and spread out) and effuse (travel through small holes).
liquid
- Liquids have fixed volume but no fixed shape. They have fixed volume but they do not have fixed or definite shape. …
- Liquids flow from higher to lower level.
- Liquids have their boiling points above room temperature, under normal conditions.
gases
Gas is a state of matter that has no fixed shape and no fixed volume. Gases have lower density than other states of matter, such as solids and liquids
what is diffusion
Diffusion is the net movement of molecules or atoms from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration
increasing the temperature does
when you increase the temperature it makes the particles move faster. they have two effects:
they hit the walls harder
they hit the walls more often
reducing the volume does
when you reduce the volume it increases pressure. this is because when the particles are squashed up into a smaller space they will hit the walls more often
At room temperature, what state is mercury in
Mercury is the only metal element that is liquid at room temperature.
Which state can be compressed or squashed easily?
A gas can be compressed or squashed easily
what state of matter has the most energy in them
it is gases because gases are don’t have a definite volume which means they are allowed to freely move
