The teacher talks about how the Jewish people are persecuted by Hitler and how he is prejudiced against the Jewish people - and that in America “we do not believe in persecuting anyone” She thinks her teacher is not looking at how they are treating the African American community / people
Explain the symbolism of the roly-poly bug in the novel.
While sleeping outside - Scout tries to kill a roly-poly but Jem stops her. He says that they need to protect the innocent. The roly-poly did nothing to her but exist. the Roly-poly is a symbol of the weak and oppressed who are stomped on by society
Why does Atticus say it is a sin to kill a mockingbird? What does the mockingbird symbolize in the novel?
Symbolizes innocence and goodness - - A mockingbird does not do anything except sing and does not harm anyone. It is an act of cruelty against something pure and innocent.
What is the novel ‘s definition of courage? Give an example of a character acting out this definition of courage?
when you know you’re licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what“
Atticus when he accepts to defend Tom Robinson - - the jury is against him - the town / society is against him
Why does Dolphus pretend to act like he’s the town drunk? What does his brown paper bag represent?
Alcoholism - - he pretends to be drunk so that the town will focus on that behavior instead of the fact that he is in love and married a black woman and has children with her. He knows that the ridicule would be far worse if he did not give the town the alcohol to focus on.
While watching Tom’s trial, Jem and Scout form different opinions of the outcome. What do they think the verdict will be and why?
Jem - - focuses on the facts of the trial and believes that if the jury thinks about the facts Tom will be innocent
Scout - - she was focusing on the jury and the views of the town
