TMJ (UNIT 4) Flashcards
What is the Temporomandibular joint (TMJ)?
The only freely movable joint in the skull
Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) components:
- Articular Disc
- Articular tubercle
- Mandibular fossa
- Mandibular Condylar head
Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ)
Synovial Cavities:
- Upper and lower Synovial Cavities
- Synovial membrane
- Synovial membrane villi
Upper synovial cavity permits what?
gliding movements
Lower synovial cavity permits what?
hinge movements
What does the synovial membrane line?
The inner surface of fibrous capsule of the TMJ
The margins of the disc
Does the synovial membrane line the articular surface?
No
What does the synovial membrane secrete?
synovial fluid
Why does synovial membrane secrete synovial fluid?
for lubrication and nutrition of articular tissues.
What is the articular capsule?
A thin, fibrous, avascular connective tissue sleeve enveloping joint components and attached to the temporal bone and mandibular condyle.
What reinforces the articular capsule laterally?
The temporomandibular ligament
Where are synovial membrane villi most prominent?
In non-compression areas, such as the inferior synovial cavity (anterior and posterior borders) and the superior synovial cavity near the bilaminar process attachment to the temporal bone.
Both the mandibular condyle and the articular tubercle have what bone cores?
Spongey bone cores
What do the condyle and tubercle have?
dense fibrous CT lining
In tubercle, the dense fibrous CT lining maybe become what?
fibroelastic cartilage under the lining
