TMJ disorders Flashcards
craniomandibular disorder
cmd
A group of pathologies affecting the masticatory muscles, the TMJ and related structures
Pain is commonly reported in the regions of the TMJ around the ear, head and neck
three groups of classifying TMJ disorders
Muscle disorders
Disc displacement
Arthralgia arthritis arthrosis
Articular structures
Condyle
Articular disc
Superior lateral pterygoid
Retrodiscal tissue
Disc displacement with reduction
elongated collateral ligaments, and retrodiscal tissues
Disc lies in an anterior posterior at rest
condyles are posterior to the posterior region of the disc
On opening, the condyle reduces back over the posterior region of the disc and normal function resumes
Disc displacement without reduction
elasticity of the collateral ligaments and retrodiscal tissues is lost
Condyles are unable to guide over the posterior region onto the disc
When the disc is not reduced, translation of the condyles stops as the disc is forced anteriorly
condylar subluxation
occurs with hyper mobility of a joint capsule
Condyle and disc translate over the articular eminence appearing to jump forward into the maximum opening position
Hypermobility intervention
Stabilization
Teach to
not open wide
Limit opening to which can be performed in the tongue up position
Lateral pole palpation
Isometric exercises
Address Muscle weakness
Mandibular muscle relaxation BFB
hypomobility treatment
mobilize
Manual mobilization
Self mobilization
Intra-oral appliance mobilizing splints
Stretching
evaluation of TMJ
Postural screen
Palpation also include cervical spine
