TMJ Flashcards
Components of TMJ
mandibular condyle
articular eminence and fossa
articular disc
how large is the mandibular condyle?
25 mm wide (in men)
what type of joint is TMJ? what type of movement does it do?
compound joint (involves multiple bones)
hinging and gliding
is the articular fossa functioning or non-functioning?
non-functioning
is the articular eminence functioning or non-functioning?
funcioning
what is the role of the TMJ ligaments?
to support and limit movement
4 TMJ ligaments
- fibrous capsule (capsular ligaments)
- lateral ligament (TMJ ligament)
- stylomandibular ligaments
- sphenomandibular ligament
Fibrous capsule (capsular ligament)
controls excessive forward and downward (depression&protrusion) movement of mandible
Lateral ligament (TMJ ligament)
reinforces capsular ligaments, limits lateral movement
Stylomandibular ligaments
limits protrusion
sphenomandibular ligament
limits depression (opening capacity)
4 Muscles of Mastication
- Masseter muscles
- Temporalis muscles
- Medial pterygoid muscles
- Lateral pterygoid muscles
Masseter muscle
elevatesmandible, closes teeth
origin: zygomatic arch
insertion: lat. surface of rami and angle of mandible
Temporalis muscles
to elevate and retrude mandible (anterior/verticle fibers elevate, posterior/horizontal fibers retrude
origin: temporal fossa on cranium
insertion: coronoid process, anterior border of ramus and temporal crest
Medial pterygoid muscles
elevate mandible, close teeth together
origin: pterygoid fossae (sphenoid)
insertion: medial angle of mandible
