How many bones are in the human skull?
28
Convexities
AKA: crest, eminence, protuberance, tubercle (smaller), ridge, process (extensions really far out from main bone)
extend outward from main bone
Concavities
AKA: alveolus, fossa, fissure (indicated separation), grove, fovea, sinus, cavity
Hollow spaces, depressions
Openings
AKA: aperture, foramen, meatus
Passages
What two sections are formed from a midsaggital cut?
R and L halves
What two sections are formed from a frontal cut?
front (anterior) and back (posterior) of head
Roles of bones of neurocranium
hold, protect, surround the brain
Roles of bones of the face
for facial features, important for digestion and respiration
Bones of the neurocranium
frontal parietal (paired) occipital sphenoid ethmoid temporal (paired)
Suture lines of the cranium
sagittal (between two parietal bones)
coronal (between frontal and pariteal)
squamosal (between frontal, parietal, temporal)
lambdoid (between parietal bones and occipital)
formed by fibrous CT
Frontal bone
protects brain from front, forms forehead and eyebrown area, forms part of roof of orbit
Foramina in frontal bone
supraorbital foramen
infraorbital foramen
mental foramen
all in straight line on both sides of face
Parietal bones
protects brain laterally and posteriorly
Occipital bone
protects brain inferiorly
Jugular foramen
allows passage of CN IX (glossopharyngeal) and jugular v, is between temporal and occipital bones, lateral to occipital condyle
Sphenoid bone
main portion is body of sphenoid, contains sella turcica (little chair) which holds pituitary gland, cannot be seen from superior view
Ethmoid bone
forms anterior cranial fossa (sphenoid, frontal, ethmoid bones), forms most of nasal cavity, inferior choncae is NOT part of ethmoid
Temporal bones from lateral view
external auditory meatus mastoid process (lateral) articular eminence and fossa zygomatic process styloid process (medial)
Temporal bones from below
stylomastoid fossa (passge for CN VII) articular fossa and eminence petrotympanic fissure (CN VII)
Temporal bones from above
petrous portion or process
internal acoustic meatus (CN VII)
Bones of the face
mandible (single) vomer (single) maxilla palatine zygomatic nasal lacrimal conchae
Bony processes of maxilla
frontal processes (nasal/frontal)
zygomatic processes
alveolar processes
palatal processes
What forms the hard palate?
palatal processes (R and L), and palatine bones
