TMD Flashcards
What is the most common form of TMD?
myofascial pain
What is trismus
Spasm of masseter muscle
Often following overstretch from dental work
TMJ TrP referral patterns?
Temporalis: maxillary teeth
Masseter: all teeth
Bruxism
Grinding of teeth
- worse with sleeping
- worse with stress
What is TMJ deflection?
Shift in jaw position without return to neutral
Often found with disc displacement. displaces towards IPSILATERAL side
What is TMJ deviation?
Shift in jaw position with a return to neutral.
“C” pattern indicative of capsular pattern
“S” pattern indicative of motor control limitation
Anterior disc displacement with reduction
Disc rests anteriorly
Click with opening is disc reducing
click with closing is dislocation
Anterior disc displacement without reduction
Disc stays anterior
May have limited opening
What is the most common TMJ disc displacement?
Anterior medial
Mechanics of TMJ by cavity
During opening: rotation occurs in inferior cavity
translation occurs in superior cavity
Disc rotates posteriorly at initiation of motion
Mechanics of TMJ by time frame
Rotation occurs in 1st half of motion
Translation occurs in 2nd half of motion
What is normal TMJ ROM
Opening: males: 40-45mm
females: 45-50mm
Functional opening: 3 finger widths (35mm)
Retraction:3mm
Protrusion: 6-9mm
TMJ innervation
mandibular branch of trigeminal nerve
Muscle of TMJ retraction
Deep masseters
temporalis
suprahyoid
Muscle of TMJ protrusion
medial and lateral pterygoid
superficial masseters
