TMD Flashcards
1
Q
collateral ligaments of TMJ
A
medial goes from disc to medial pole
lateral goes from disc to lateral pole
2
Q
stylomandibular ligament
A
- primary function to limit excessive jar protrusion
3
Q
sphenomandibular ligament
A
- no significant affect on limiting normal mandibular motion
4
Q
articular disc
A
- dense fibrous tissue
- divides joint into superior and inferior compartments
- posterior attachment to the temporal bone through a section of loose retrodiscal tissue
- anterior attachment to the capsule and superior lateral pterygoid muscle
5
Q
mandibular opening muscles
A
- inferior lateral pterygoid
- digastric
- secondary muscles: stylohyoid, geniohyoid, mylohyoid
40-60 mm
6
Q
mandibular closing muscles
A
temporalis
masseter
medial pterygoid
7
Q
lateral mandibular movement
A
- temporalis (ipsilateral)
- medial and lateral pterygoid (contralateral)
5-10 mm
8
Q
protrusion
A
5-10 mm
masseter
medial pterygoid
lateral pterygoid
9
Q
retrusion
A
temporalis
digastric
hyoid muscles
small mobility
10
Q
innervation
A
- trigeminal nerve (cn V)
- opthalmic division (orbit and frontal)
- maxillary division (anterior portion of temple, maxillary, nasal cavity, upper teeth)
- mandibular division (post temple, masseter, mandibular, lower teetch)
11
Q
mouth opening
A
- rotation of mandible (condyle) on articular disc (20-25 mm)
- translation of condyle and disc on mandibular fossa (condyle moves anteriorly and inferiorly; anterior surface of mandible moes posteriorly and inferiorly)
12
Q
mouth closing
A
- disc and condyle translate together posteriorly
- condyle rotates posteriorly
13
Q
lateral mouth movement
A
- unilateral rotation of ipsilateral condyle
- unilateral translation of contralateral condyle
14
Q
craniomandibular disorder symptoms
A
- face or jaw pain
- joint sounds
- limitation in jaw movement
- muscle tenderness
- TMJ joint tenderness
- headache
- ear symptoms
- cervical spine disorder
15
Q
group 1: muscle disorders
A
- myofascial pain
- myofascial pain with limitations in aperture
