TLC Flashcards
When you put TLC plate in the developing chamber, should the solvent in the developing chamber be above or below the line you have drawn? Why?
The solvent should be below the line because of the samples are submerged in the solvent then they will dissolve and not move up.
When do you remove The TLC plate from the developing jar?
When the solvent is about 1 cm from the top of the TLC plate
List two purposes when you might want to use TLC
To determine the number of components in a mixture and determine the identity of an unknown compound
Where on the TLC plate should your sample be please
The sample should be placed 1 cm from the bottom of the plate
Why should the TLC plate be removed from the solvent before the solvent front which is the top of the plate
Because this will interfere with the RF causing an incorrect RF value
Why should the developing chamber for the TLC plate not be open to the atmosphere
So the solvent does not evaporate.
You placed three samples on a TLC plate developed them for the proper amount of time in the developing jar but when you looked at the plate under UV light you saw one big spot why is that
The samples ran into each other as they travelled up the plate.
