Titrations Flashcards

1
Q

What is the equivalence point

A

The point in a titration where a controlled amount of one solution is added to another solution until exactly enough has been added for a complete reaction to occur between the two reactants

Also called end point, determined by a indicator

Q

What is the purpose of a titration

What’s in a titration

A

To find the concentration of one of the solutions

One of the solution is an acid and one is a base

Q

What is a titration curve

What are the two types

A

A plot of pH VS volume of added reactant

SB added to SA: steady then shoots up then steady ph=7 is equivalent pt

SB added to weak acid: 8.72 is equivalent pt

Q

At the half equivalence point, what are the critical thing that happen

A

[acid]=[base]
[acid]/[base]=1
Log ([base]/[acid])=0
[H]=Ka so, pH=pKa

Q

What are the important regions of a titration curve

A

Initial: just the weak acid is present

Buffer region: conjugate acid base pair (HA and A-) present

Equivalence point: all OH reacted with HA

After equivalence point: excess strong base. OH
