Titration Flashcards
What does a titration do?
Allows you to find out how much acid is needed to neutralise and akali , or vice versa.
What can you use titration to work out?
Concentration
Process:
Using a pipette, add a set volume of alkali into a conical flask.
Add two or three drop of indicators to the alkaline solution.
Using a funnel , fill a burette with an acid of an known concentration and record the initial volume.
Using the burette add little drops of the acid into the alkaline solution.
If you see a colour change, then the alkali has been neutralised.
What is an indicator?
An indicator is something that estimate the pH of a solution by changing colours.
What type of indicator do you use in titration?
A single indicator
Name the three single indicators used in titration?
Phenolphthalein
Methyl Orange
Litmus
Colour change in phenolphthalein
Pink in alkali
Colourless in acid
Colour change in Litmus
Red in Acid
Blue in Alkali
Colour change in methyl orange
Red in acid
Yellow in alkali
