Reactions of Acids Flashcards
Write out the neutralization equation
Acid + Base —> Salt + Water
What is a base?
A base is a substance that neutralise an acid; Normally an alkali
Name three types of Bases used commonly in neutralization
Metal Oxides
Metal Hydroxides
Metal Carbonates
Why are bases Alkali?
When dissolved in water, the metal hydroxide, oxide, or carbonate will form OH- ions
Name three acids used commonly today in neutralization and what salts they form.
Hydrochloric acid —> Chloride salts
Sulphuric acid —> Sulphate salts
Nitric acid —> Nitrate salts
The equation for Acids and Metal Oxide/Hydroxide
Acid + Metal Oxide/Hydroxide —> Salt + Water
The equation for Acids and Metal carbonates
Acid + Metal Carbonate —> Salt + Carbon dioxide + Water
