what is the role of epidermis in plants?

A

epidermis is a protective tissue in plants which protects the underlying tissue. it forms the outer covering of many plant organs and remains in direct contact with the environment. any substance, solid, liquid or gas can enter and move outside the plant only after it passes through epidermis. epidermis helps in absorption, secretion, excretion, exchange of gases and transpiration. it protects the entry of pathogens.

how does cork act as a protective tissue?

A

the cork cells are dead and have no intercellular spaces between them. the cell walls are coated with suberin, a waxy substance. *due to these properties, cork act as a protective tissue and protects underlying tissues.
