Tissues Characteristics Flashcards
What separates epithelial tissue from other three?
- Widespread in your body
*They cover and line, and have one free surface
Epithelial Characteristics:
*Underside of tissue is held to connective tissue by a basement membrane
How packed are epithelial cells?
closely packed, very little matrix
What type of cells has no blood supply?
epithelial
Classification of epithelial tissue:
-single layers = simple
-many layers = stratified
-falsely stratified = pseudostratified
Flat shaped cells:
squamous
Square shaped cells:
cuboidal
Rectangular shaped cells:
columnar
Cells that change shape:
transitional
Simple Squamous Epithelium:
- Large Nuclei in Center
- Functions: Filtration & diffusion
- Location: Wall of capillaries, Alveoli of Lungs
Simple Cuboidal Epithelium:
- Centrally located Nucleus
- Functions: Secretion & Absorption
- Location: Kidney Tubules, Ovaries
Simple Columnar Epithelium:
- Nucleus near bottom
- Functions: Secretes & Absorbs
- Location: Lining the uterus, stomach, and intestines
Pseudostratified Columnar Epithelium:
- May have cilia
- May have goblet cells
- Location: Lining respiratory and reproductive systems
Stratified Squamous Epithelium:
- Mitosis occurs at basement membrane
- Cells near free surface are dead
- Location: Skin, mouth, throat, vagina, canal
Stratified Cuboidal Epithelium:
- 2 or 3 layers thick
- Location: Lines ducts of mammary glands, sweat glands, salivary glands, and pancreas
Stratified Columnar Epithelium:
- Rare in body
- Location: vas deferens and pharynx
Mitosis: Prophase
- Begins karyokinesis
- Nuclear membrane begins to disappear
- Chromosomes become visible
Mitosis: Metaphase
- Chromosomes line up on equatorial
- Spindle attaches to chromosomes at centrosphere
Mitosis: Anaphase
- Chromosomes separate and move to opposite poles
- Cytokinesis begins
Mitosis: Telophase
- Cytokinesis and Karyokinesis complete
- Nuclear membrane reappears
- Chromosomes become less visible
Hyaline Cartilage:
- Contains chondrocytes
- Makes template for most bone
Mesothelium location:
serous membrane
Elastic Cartilage:
- Contains chondrocytes
- Strong and Flexible (nose and ears)
Compact bone:
- Osteocytes
Blood is the only…
liquid connective tissue
Three types of muscle tissue:
- Cardiac (intercalated discs)
- Skeletal
- Smooth
Nervous tissue:
- Multipolar nerve cells have multiple dendrites
- A cell body that contains the nucleus, and a single axon
- Nerve impulses flow from dendrites to cell body to axon
