Tissues and Organs Flashcards
Name 4 types of tissues.
- Muscular
- connective
- nervous
- epithelial
What is the function of the Muscle tissue?
- Movement
contracting and relaxing
What is the function of the nervous tissue?
Signal and coordinating things in the body
- sends electrical impulses in the form of action potentials.
What is the function of the epithelial tissue?
lines organs for a larger surface area and secretes mucus.
What is connective tissue?
Tissues that connect, support, and help bind other tissues.
Which location is epithelial tissues found in?
- Salivary glands of digestive tract
What are the types of epithelial tissues?
- simple (single layers)
- stratified (many layers)
What are the examples of epithelial tissues?
- Squamous (flattened)
- Cuboidal (cube shaped)
- Columnar (tall)
What is squamous epithelium?
- A single layer of cells that are flat.
- Cells are thin - rapid diffusion.
What is cuboidal epithelium?
- cube shaped cells
- larger and thicker than squamous
What is columnar epithelium?
- cells are tall and narrow
What are the three types of Muscle tissue?
- Cardiac - heart (involuntary)
- Smooth - oesophagus (involuntary)
- Skeletal - (Movement)
What is the plasma membrane of muscle cells called?
Sarcolemma
What is the cytoplasm of muscle cells?
Sarcoplasm
What is Cardiac Muscle?
Makes up thick middle layer of the heart.
What is skeletal Muscle?
Skeletal Muscle is attached to bone by a tendon and is required for movement.
What is smooth muscle?
helps with digestion and found in the lining of digestive tract.
Function of connective tissue.
- insulation
- protection
- structural support
What is Areolar connective tissue?
Its also known as loose connective tissue and it holds organs in place and attaches epithelial tissue to other underlying tissues.
What is adipose tissue?
A type of specialised connective tissue whose main functions are to store the energy and to protect the organs
Name the two types of adipose tissue
- brown adipose tissue
- white adipose tissue
What is brown adipose tissue?
Transfer energy from food into heat.
- high number of mitochondria
What is white adipose tissue?
thermal insulator and energy store.
What is cartilage tissue?
Is a form of fibrous connective tissue and gives flexible support.
