Tissues and Introduction to Metabolism-Lecture 3 Exam 1 Flashcards
4 Major Tissue Types
Epithelial, Connective, Muscle, & Neural/Nervous
Cell Junctions
Structures that provide contact or adhesion between neighboring cells
Gap Junctions
-Allow rapid, cell-to-cell communication
-Allow for chemical and electrical signals to pass from one cell to another
Tight Junctions
Create a barrier to restrict the movement of material between cells
Anchoring Junctions (desmosomes)
Create tissue strength by attaching cells to each other or to the matrix
Describe the general features of epithelial tissue and give a few examples of where epithelial
tissue is found in the body
*Regulates the exchange between the internal and external environment
* Provides protection by covering exposed surfaces and lining cavities
* Replicates often
* Avascular: no blood vessels
* Forms glands
-Found in digestive tract, respiratory tract, urinary tract, kidneys, lungs, intestines, etc.
