Tissues and Cells Flashcards
Where are Multipolar Neurons located?
CNS & Motor Neurons
Major functions of Multipolar Neurons
-Conduct action potentials away from the CNS -talks to muscles, glands, or other neurons
Where are Bipolar Neurons located?
Sensory Organs- retina of eye and nasal cavity
Major functions of Bipolar Neurons
Receives stimulus- axon conducts action potential to CNS
Where are Pseudo-Unipolar Neurons located?
-Dorsal Root Ganglia (near spinal cord) -skin and muscle
Major functions of Pseudo-Unipolar Neurons
-respond to stimuli- pressure and pain
Where are Astrocytes located?
surfaces of blood vessels, neurons, and pia mater
Major functions of Astrocytes
help regulate the extracellular composition of brain fluid- aid both beneficial and detrimental responses to tissue damage in CNS
Where are Ependymal Cells located?
-ventricles of brain -central canal of spinal cord
Major functions of Ependymal Cells
patches of cilia–> move cerebrospinal fluid through brain cavities
Where is Microglia located?
CNS
Major functions of Microglia
-(pacman) performs phagocytosis -response to inflammation and damaged areas (infection, trauma, stroke)
Where are Oligodendrocytes located?
Surround axons (CNS)
Major functions of Oligodendrocytes
Insulates several axons- myelin sheath
Where are Schwann Cells located?
surround axon (PNS)
