Tissues Flashcards
What is histology
The study of tissues
What are four of the primary types of tissue
- Epithelial
- Connective
- Muscular
- Nervous
What functions do epithelial cells serve? (6)
Hint - think GI tract and skin
- Protects, covers and lines
- Filters biochemical substances
- Absorbs nutrients
- Provides sensory input
- Secretions
- Excretions
What can characterize epithelial tissue? (4)
- Cells are polar
- Connect to neighbouring cells through junctional complexes
- All Avascular - no blood vessels
- Infrequent innervated - sensory
What is the apical surface?
f-Aces the body cavity or lumen
What is the basal surface?
Faces the Bottom or underlying tissue.
What is a tight junction?
Glycoprotien bonding between two cells. Holding liquid; no leaks.
What is a gap junction?
Bound by connexons through channel proteins. Used for transport between cells.
What is a Desmosome
Joined by intercellular filaments. Used for stretching and movement.
What is a hemidesmosome?
Connect to basement membrane
What is the basement membrane?
A place where molecular exchanges take place and where the cell connects to connective tissue.
What does cilia and microvilli do for the epithelial cell?
Microvilli are also called the brush border, increases surface area for absorbing. Cilia help to push and move things.
What defines simple squamous tissue?
One layer of flat thin cells. Absorbs.
What defines simple cubiodal tissue?
A single layer of cubed cells. Protective.
What defines a simple columnar tissue?
One layer of long columnar cells. Protective and absorbs.
